Indoor air may seem calm, but the air closest to the body is constantly disturbed by movement, airflow, and nearby activity.

The real question is not whether air is treated somewhere in the room, but whether protection can be established near the user’s actual breathing position.

The Origin of IONFRESHER®

In 2002, Michael Jan, founder of Altrason Inc., began researching indoor air purification technology. At the time, instead of developing another device built around strong airflow, replaceable filters, or complex mechanical structures, he returned to a more fundamental question:

Could an indoor air purification device be created without a filter, without a fan, and still operate reliably over the long term?

At that time, most air purification products were still based on filters and fans, with air treatment relying mainly on air intake, filtration, and continuous circulation.

Very few chose to explore a different path. That path was to establish a continuously active purification mechanism directly in the air through stable ionization, making the device simpler, easier to maintain, and better suited for long-term use.

That question became the starting point of IONFRESHER®.

The Formation of Its Early Core Technologies

Under this development direction, IONFRESHER® gradually established its own core air-treatment logic and developed three key technologies:

  • Plasma Sterilization: Through high-voltage needle-tip discharge, a stable ionization zone is created in the air to help reduce bacterial adhesion and the presence of suspended pollutants.

  • Electrostatic Dust Collection: Charged particles in the air are attracted to grounded metal plates, creating a dust-collection method that does not rely on conventional filters.

  • Negative Ion Purification: Negative ions are continuously released within a small personal area to help improve the air conditions around the user.

The development of IONFRESHER® was never simply about listing technical terms. It was about integrating these three functions into a single air-treatment logic capable of stable long-term operation.

What truly mattered was not merely the use of plasma technology itself, but whether sterilization, dust collection, and negative ion purification could work together at the same time and be turned into a practical product.

The Birth of the LS-212 DC 12V

Based on this technical direction, IONFRESHER® introduced its early representative model: LS-212 DC 12V.

It was an indoor air purification device that did not rely on filters, did not require a fan, and was built around stable ionization as its core operating principle.

It was not created to pursue high-profile marketing, but to provide a daily air-treatment solution in a quieter, simpler, and more sustainable form for long-term use.

Unlike many products that depend heavily on marketing exposure, the LS-212 DC 12V continued to sell steadily across different regions for many years, driven largely by its actual performance and accumulated market acceptance.

Twenty-Two Years of Market Validation

From its launch in 2003 to the end of production in 2025, the LS-212 DC 12V remained on the market for more than twenty years and achieved global sales of more than 2 million units.

The significance of this number lies not only in the sales volume itself, but in what it represents: this technical logic had already been validated in the real market over a long period of time.

It was not a short-lived trend product, nor a device that existed only in the laboratory or concept stage. It was a mature product path that entered everyday life over many years and was repeatedly used by different users in real-world settings.

The earliest success of IONFRESHER® did not come from large-scale brand operations. It came from the product itself being stable enough, simple enough, and practical enough to be accepted over the long term.

From Indoor Air Purification to Personal Air Protection

As usage scenarios continued to evolve, IONFRESHER® began rethinking the next direction of air treatment.

In its earlier stage, IONFRESHER® was mainly focused on indoor air purification itself. Its technical core was to establish a long-operating air-treatment logic through stable ionization, without relying on filters or requiring a fan.

This technical route had already been validated over time in the market, and it became the foundation that allowed the LS-212 DC 12V to remain on the market continuously for more than twenty years.

But as the product continued to be used, IONFRESHER® gradually recognized one important fact: even if the overall space could be treated, the small area of air closest to the user’s breathing position still deserved more precise protection.

This was not a rejection of existing air purification equipment. It was the next question raised by real-world use scenarios.

 

When air is constantly moving, mixing, and being disturbed, the treatment result of the overall space does not necessarily fully match the actual experience and needs of the air closest to the user.

For this reason, IONFRESHER® began extending its focus from indoor air purification to personal air protection.

The Real-World Challenge of the Personal Breathing Zone

In real life, air is never truly still. Human movement, speaking, opening doors, air-conditioner airflow, fan disturbance, and even people passing by can continuously change the air conditions around the body.

This points to a very practical reality: even when the overall space is being treated, the small area closest to a person’s breathing position may still be continuously affected by surrounding airflow, dust, odors, suspended pollutants, and the activities of others.

This situation is common in homes, offices, commercial spaces, and many other open indoor environments. A space may be purified, but the personal breathing zone is not necessarily protected in a stable way.

This led IONFRESHER® to see more clearly that air protection should not be limited to the single idea of treating the overall space. It also needs to move closer to the user’s actual position and range.

Redefining the IONFRESHER® LS-212 PLUS Personal Air Purification Shield

For this reason, while continuing its original ionization-based purification technology, IONFRESHER® LS-212 PLUS began redefining a form of air treatment that is closer to the user’s breathing position, can operate continuously within a fixed small area, and does not need to be worn on the body for long periods: the Personal Air Purification Shield.

The core of this concept is not to replace masks, face shields, or space-based air purification equipment, but to fill the gap in personal breathing-zone protection that has not yet been fully addressed between them.

What it focuses on is not full-room treatment, nor long-term wearable physical blocking, but the small area closest to the user’s breathing position.

For IONFRESHER® LS-212 PLUS, this is not simply the addition of a new product name. It is a step that moves air treatment from the space closer to the person.

2026: Launch of the IONFRESHER® Personal Air Purification Shield

With this line of thinking, IONFRESHER® introduced a new USB 5V version in 2026 and officially repositioned the product as the IONFRESHER® LS-212 PLUS Personal Air Purification Shield.

This change was not merely an update in power format, nor a simple continuation of the previous product. It marked a further development from an indoor air purification device into a product defined by personal air protection.

What it targets is no longer just the space itself, but the user’s personal breathing zone within an immediate personal area of approximately 1.6 square meters. Within this range, the product continuously establishes a small-area air-treatment point closer to the individual’s actual position, so that air protection no longer depends only on whole-space treatment or long-term wearable barriers.

From One Product to a New Understanding of Air Protection

The development of IONFRESHER® has never been only about creating an air purification device. It has always returned to a more essential question: Can air protection move closer to the person?

From the LS-212 DC 12V in 2003 to the IONFRESHER® LS-212 PLUSPersonal Air Purification Shield in 2026, what IONFRESHER® has continued is not a single model, but an evolving technical path: from a filter-free, fan-free indoor purification logic based on stable ionization, to small-area air protection centered more closely on the user’s breathing zone.

Its essence has always been one thing: to bring air treatment closer to the place that truly needs to be protected.

Brand Development Path

Since 2003, this development path has continued to expand—from IONFRESHER LS-212  air treatment (2003), to Procozy environmental control (2015), to HumiDry drying control (2020), to the IONFRESHER LS-212 PLUS Personal Air Purification Shield (2026), and to VOC Decomposer for airflow and reaction control (2027). Together, these directions reflect the continued extension of one technical foundation across different environmental applications.
